The Last Redoubt
- THE LAST REDOUBT - A computer generated painting. It appears in the book, "Masters of the Weird Tale: Hodgson'" by William Hope Hodgson, published by Centipede Press in 2009. It is one of the "Night Land" illustrations.
"The Night Land" is a long masterful fantasy novel that belongs on every fantasy lovers bookshelf. The story takes place in the very far future when the sun is dying, the Earth is in darkness, and the last survivors of the human race are huddled in two huge pyramid-like structures separated half a world apart. Between them the landscape is desolated, filled with horrors unimaginable. Among the survivors in pyramid one lives a man called "X," and among the survivors in the other pyramid lives Naana, the woman he loves. "X" decides to leave the safety of his pyramid and cross the "Night Land" to unite with his love, and the incredible adventure begins.
I prefer the shorter version, "The Dream of X" because in the longer version, "The Night Land," the terrible adventures that "X" experiences while crossing the long and dangerous landscape go on and on until they begin to wear on your mind, and as good as the novel is, the continual confrontation of horrors come dangerously close to becoming tiresome. No doubt other Hodgson fans disagree with my opinion.
